Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Green Herons have had a very busy term two, being safe and respectful learners. We are all working cooperatively and showing persistence, when learning new and challenging things.

The Green Herons have been working very hard in reading groups this term. Reading a variety of texts and learning how to locate evidence within a text, to answer literal and inferential comprehension questions. We have loved publishing all our work on the laptops and working on writing amazing ‘sizzling starts’ for our imaginative texts. The Green Herons are becoming great authors.

During mathematics, we have been using a variety of strategies to recall multiplication facts and have been playing fun multiplication games to help us learn all our times tables.

We have been attending the Life Skills Program on Wednesdays and have been very motivated Yoga participants. We have leant about mindfulness, respect, breathing exercises and how to build resilience. We participated in activities where we did yoga moves to build on our teamwork and trusting each other.

The Green Herons will continue being inquisitive learners and having fun along the way. We are very excited about performing at our K-6 Assembly in Week 10 and looking forward to the school holidays in three weeks.

Fairy Wrens Class Insight

The Fairy Wrens have settled into term 2 with flying colours. We are all working hard and ready to learn lots of new things. As we learn we are making sure we are having fun and helping each other. We are working on lots of interesting and new activities.

We have decided in our class that we will be independent learners with flexible seating this year. We are being responsible learners by choosing seats in our classroom that are good for our learning. We have chosen learning goals for our subjects and are working towards mastering them.

This term we have been using technology to help us research about Explorers. We made posters about our Explorers and presented them to our class. We were also given a maths challenge to build a tall tower that would hold an egg. We had to work together in a team and think about our design. Some of our towers were able to hold more than one egg.

On the 5th June 2019 our class will be presenting our class item at the school assembly. We are learning all about the environment and are super excited to show you our class item. We think it is very special.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

On Tuesday, Year 2 went on a wonderful excursion to the best shop in the world, Woolworths. At Woolworths we tasted lots of yummy fruit like bananas, watermelon and strawberries. It was so yummy. Then when we finished our tour we got an activity book and free fruit.

After the Woolworths tour we went to Revesby park for recess. For recess I had two packets of chips and looked in my beautiful activity book. When we were leaving the park we saw the railway station and someone who worked there.

We left the park and we went to see all kinds of shops and lots of banks like Commonwealth bank, ANZ and Westpac. Then we saw more shop like a jewellery shop, a barber shop and different types of shops. Then we went to the park, but it was sprinkling, but then we got to play.

The Honeyeaters have had a very busy start to the year and are excited to see what else is to come. We have been working hard already, but also making sure we have fun along the way.

As a class we have chosen to be independent learners and have flexible seating options in the classroom. This means that we are able to choose the best seats for our learning every day. This has been very exciting!

This term we have been focusing on persuasive writing and have been making improvements already! We are enjoying looking at the different ways we can write persuasive texts and how we can improve them by adding in high modality words!

We love learning different ways to work mathematically. We have been working hard during maths and are smashing goals daily. One of the things we have learnt this term is how to partition numbers up to 4 and 5 digits, and how to use partitioning to help us solve really hard addition and subtraction. It is great to see the Honeyeaters turn into little mathematicians every day!

Finally, for our History component we have looked deeply into the "Age of Explorers". We are excited to dig deeper and complete our research task on one of the local explorers from our community!

After a busy start to the year, the Lyrebirds have now settled into their new habitat. We are working hard, but also making sure to have lots of fun in the classroom.

We have been striving to reach all goals in literacy groups. Our handwriting is improving every day and we are furthering our skills in comprehension. We aren’t just reading words, we are now retaining the information that we have just read.

We are all lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn our creative arts KLA whilst also being taught about Indigenous history by Mr Shannon during our ‘Song Room’ lesson. The kids love our weekly hour with Mr Shannon.

It is great to see our mathematics knowledge growing with each lesson. All students are determined to understand the content, which is helped by our fantastic TENS lessons.

Lastly, our science component is largely based around materials and how they can be used together to create a variety of objects. These photos speak for themselves and show how creative the Lyrebirds are and how much fun these lessons are!

Term 1 in the Galahs classroom.

So far this term we have been having a great time with our learning.

We are developing our literacy skills and have been writing about the beach and the Daintree Rainforest.

In maths we have been discovering place value, partitioning and how we can use these strategies to add three digit numbers. In science we have explored and investigated the materials that our school is made of.

On Friday’s we are so lucky to have Shannon from the Song Room teach us lessons about Aboriginal culture and customs. Shannon has been teaching us rap songs, dreamtime stories and art. Here are some of the owls we drew last week.
5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Let’s prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Swimming Carnival

Our Swimming Carnival this year was a successful day due to the contributions of all staff members, students and parents.

To the teachers who attended and did jobs on the day, to the kindy teachers who offered support during, before and after, to Stage 1 and learning support staff who stayed behind to look after the extras, to our office staff who organised all of our notes, money and buses, THANK YOU! Carnivals really are a team effort.

The district carnival will be held 5 March, 2019 with the regional carnival the following week on 12 March, 2019.

Thank you for your ongoing support with the sporting programs at Panania North Public School. There is such great value in ensuring that all of our students have access to specialised coaching and the opportunity to showcase their skills, athletic ability and potentially reach higher levels of competition.

Yours in sport

Mr Williams

The first day of Kindergarten and the return to school in the new year are busy times for your child – and for the entire family. To help you make the most of this time and enjoy the experience, we’ve compiled some useful tips and checklists. We want every student to be known, valued and cared for in our schools.

Our film #FirstDay2019 captures the excitement – and the nerves – of the rite of passage that is the first day of Kindergarten.

Family feedback about schools always welcome

We know the quality of the relationship between families and schools has a direct impact on student wellbeing and educational outcomes.

There will be times when parents and carers want to ask a question, raise an issue or make a complaint about our schools and it can be hard for families to know where to start. Families have told us that it can be difficult to find the right person to talk to, or don’t know what steps to take to bring an issue to someone’s attention.

A short video, produced in consultation with schools, is helping families find the right person if they have a question or want to raise an issue, make a complaint or provide a compliment. The video encourages families to contact their school or the department early and in a positive way to help resolve any issues together.

The video complements information on our website and is an accessible way for families to find out about the complaints process. Positive feedback is also important and families are encouraged to let us know when something has gone well.

Visit the complaints, compliments and suggestions webpage for more information.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Pythons & the Edison robots

Stage 3 Pythons are loving their time with our Edison robots!

To become familiar with the full power of computer programming, kids need learning tools which don’t just teach but motivate.

Programmable robots are amazing motivators for kids learning STEM topics such as computational thinking and coding.

Robots bring computer science to life.

Unlike on-screen only coding, robots let kids really see their programs working. Programmable robots provide kids with instant, tangible feedback by allowing them to test in the real world as they go.

This direct feedback helps kids discover and fix any issues as things happen. The combination of robots with coding teaches kids critical skills, such as problem-solving and debugging, in an engaging, fun, and effective way.

Panania North Public School had the privilege of hosting a regional for the Premier's Spelling Bee on Tuesday, 11 September 2018. Fourteen other schools join ours in two sections:- Junior (Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4) and Senior (Stage 3 - Years 5 and 6).

Each school is entitled to enter a maximum of two students per stage. Our entrants were Gabriella P and Tejasha K in the Junior section plus Sara M and Jenna S in the Senior section.

From the thirty students in each category, there is only one winner. The competition is tough! Despite our best efforts, unfortunately, none of our students were selected as an overall winner but they each should be proud of making it that far. I'm sure all those in attendance (parents included) would have learnt a new word or two.

Science at Sir Joseph Banks

On Monday morning 27th August, 12 budding scientists from Year 4 attended a Science workshop at Sir Joseph Banks High School.

It was a fabulous morning full of new knowledge, experiments and working with Year 7 students, including Jonathan Turner from our Year 6 2017.

First, we watched a funny safety video about working in Science laboratories, and then we did an experiment to simulate the spread of disease.

We were all given a beaker of a solution that we shared with some of our friends by using an eyedropper. One of our team supposedly had the 'disease carrier' in it so when that person shared his liquid we found out that 5 other students were 'infected'. The liquid turned bright pink to show evidence of the 'disease'.

Next we were given the task to get some 'clean salt for our chips' after someone had poured the salt into some sand. We added water to the salt /sand mixture and stirred it until the salt dissolved. Then we poured the solution through filter paper and used a Bunsen burner and tripod to boil the remaining solution until the water evaporated, leaving pure salt.

We all had a great time and thanked the staff and students at Sir Joseph Banks High School for hosting the morning.

Winners are Grinners!!!!

Last Friday, the junior rugby league team came up against an undefeated Panania Public School team in the final.

After a close semi-final, all the players were very excited about the game. The first half started off strong with an early try to us but Panania scored on the half time siren and levelled the scores at 6-6.

We looked very exhausted and tired at the break and we needed to find some strength. The second half was a see saw battle and after our second try to make it 12-6, Panania were out to even it up. When they scored next, they missed their conversion to make it 12-10 in our favour and we managed to hold them out for the rest of the game with our strong defence.

It was an unbelievable team effort!

Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you to all the spectators that came down to watch and support them throughout the season.

Players will be presented with a certificate and premiers patch at the next whole school assembly.

Legends,

P.S can all junior and senior players hand in their footy jerseys to either the office or myself.

Our programs seek to provide appropriate developmental support for each child.

YMCA NSW Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) services use an online enrolment system known as My Family Lounge www.myfamilylounge.com.au and is designed to make the enrolment process as simple as possible.

Step 1 - Register

Register for a My Family Lounge MFL account via the North Panania Webpage

https://www.ymcansw.org.au/centres/ps-panania-north/enrol/

Step 3 – Enrol your child or children

If you enquired about an enrolment, we'll be in touch with in two business days to advise whether we have a spot available. If we do, you'll need to complete an enrolment through your MFL account.

Before and After School Care

Newsletters and NotesThe school, YMCA and our Asset Management unit are continuing to work together to have Before and After School Care re-established at Panania North. Unfortunately, we cannot be given a starting date or timeframe for when the YMCA can commence.

Our temporary emergency care cannot be maintained. I would like to thank our amazing staff for volunteering their own time, unpaid, to support our families, this week. This has given us the time needed to work on a more sustainable solution.

The NSW Department of Education has reinforced to us that Before and After School Care is the sole responsibility of parents and not the school.

We have been working extremely hard on finding an alternative program to support our students and their families during this transition.

Today we have been given approval to provide extra-curricula and enrichment programs before and after school. These programs will be staffed by fully trained teachers who will be paid as a casual staff member. There will be a cost to these programs.

Morning activities: 7.00am – 8.30am ($10.00 per session)

Afternoon activities: 3.00 – 6.00pm ($22.00 per session. Afternoon tea will be provided)

Payments will need to be made by Thursday morning for the following week to enable us to organise staff, catering and activities. No refunds will be given if your child is unable to attend. Unfortunately we will also be unable to accept late payments.

Booking forms and payment forms can be found in the notes section of this website

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Our school has proudly been a PBL school for over 9 years.

Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner are our school wide expectations. A new committee has been formed with the aim of instilling these core expectations across our school and community in a consistent and collaborative manner.

At this week's Assembly we introduced the reasons why we need to follow the expectation: Be Safe: Wear your hat.

In class we have discussed the sun safety policy and have role-played following this rule. Students who do not have a hat are expected to stay and play in the shade.

You can help out home by:

Encouraging your child to check their bag and ensuring they have a hat

Wearing a hat when outdoors

Discussing how and why we need to be safe when outdoors during the day

Thank you for your support.

Opportunity Class Placement for Year 5 2017

Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Opportunity Class Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 27 July 2016.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2017, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student's email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from 26 April 2016 in a printed application information booklet and at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement. The application website opens on 26 April 2016 and closes on 13 May 2016. No late applications will be accepted.

There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 26 April 2016.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

Important Information re District Athletics

At this stage the East Hills District Athletics Carnival is going ahead as scheduled.

Based on the forecast and the condition of the track today, Tuesday 19 August, there is no reason to suggest that the carnival will not be able to proceed as planned.

As the weather can be unpredictable, if there is a change to this information, a decision will be made at 7.15am on Wednesday morning as we are unable to access the Crest until 7.00am.

Also, we do not know if there will be any disruptions to the program or scheduled events. We expect all competitors to attend, but they need to be aware that we may not be able to run particular field events. We will know more once we reassess the conditions in the morning, but there is some doubt over Discus and High Jump events. Please only use the published program as a guide and be aware that there may be changes to the order of events. If there are changes on the day, we will endeavour to send runners to team managers in the stands.

At Panania North, students need to be at school by 8.00am. There will be supervision in the grounds from 7.45am onwards.

	Thank you for your understanding.

	What is National Reconciliation Week?

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. The NRW website contains information, activities and how you can be involved in this important anniversary.

Our school has just received our 2013 order from the Earn & Learn program.

Thanks again to Woolworths and Modern Teaching Aids for running this community program. A big thank you must also go to our families, and friends of our school, without whose contribution, we would be unable to redeem hundreds of dollars worth of resources which will be used by our students.

2R and 2C students have played with some of the new equipment, including a parachute, sack race bags and giant dominoes. We are still to unpack further equipment including a water play table, portable sandpits and student whiteboards. Hopefully Woolworths will run the program again in 2014, enabling us to further build up our student equipment.

NSW Health has issued an alert recommending that people not engage in physical activity outside given the current air quality due to bushfires, particularly between Wollongong and Newcastle. For the remainder of the week, it is recommended that students not participate in outdoor school sports as this poses a potential health risk to students, particularly those with asthma or heart conditions.

For the remainder of the week we will cancel PSSA training, outdoor PE activities and all sport on Friday. I fully understand that we may have a few disappointed children, staff and parents however the health and well-being of our students is of prime importance.

 Helping our School......

On behalf of the staff, parents and students, we would like to say a huge thank you to Lend Lease, Abi Group for financing and providing a workforce during the school holidays, to assist in the improvement of our school grounds.

A wonderful team of people from Lend Lease, who are managing the M5 Widening Project, chose our school for their Community Day. They arrived with trucks, bobcats, gravel, mulch and painting equipment. Only stopping for a quick lunch, they worked incredibly hard to paint the senior toilets, line mark new handball, basketball and netball courts across our school. They built a path through our nature area and spread 2 huge 20 tonne truck loads of mulch throughout the gardens.

It was an amazing day, the team were awesome, finishing at 5.30 p.m. Our school grounds are looking great!

The Senior Boys Soccer team played the Grand Final last Friday at Playford Park against their arch rivals Panania Public School. After scoring in the first half, the whole team put in one of the best defensive efforts to hold Panania out and ended up winning the final 1-0. Full credit goes to the whole squad who were undefeated throughout the whole season. The team has shown that hard work definitely pays off and I am extremely proud of the sportsmanship and teamwork the boys have exemplified throughout the season. Thank you to all the parents and school community who came down on the day and through the season to support and cheer the boys on.

School Uniform

The standard of school uniform at Panania North Public School has always been very high because parents have supported the school uniform policy.

The wearing of school uniform has several advantages for both students and parents:

¿ School uniform contributes to a child's feelingof belonging to our school community. The need to feel a sense of belonging to a group or community is a very basic human need. It is therefore important to encourage this sense of belonging as it assists in keeping the overall tone or feeling of the school positive and caring. We all belong to this community and we all care about it.

¿ For children who walk to and from school, the wearing of a uniform offers them a degree of safety as they are recognisable to parents and community members in the local area.
