Literacy

Literacy is fundamental to a students’ ability to learn at school and to engage productively in society. One of our first goals at Panania North Public School is to provide each child with sound literacy skills in the early years.

Literacy is the ability to understand and evaluate meaning through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It involves students listening to, responding to and composing a variety of oral, print and digital texts.

At Panania North Public School, we incorporate explicit and systematic instruction in the skills, knowledge and understandings required for students to be literate. In the early years this will include the explicit teaching of:

  • phonemic awareness
  • phonics
  • vocabulary knowledge
  • comprehension
  • concepts about print
  • grammar
  • punctuation
  • spelling
  • handwriting
  • creating texts

Our teaching and learning programs across the school are developed to include effective literacy teaching practices that meet the diverse learning needs of our students, so that all students are challenged and make improvements in their learning.

We invite you to share in our literacy learning journey with your child by accessing our learning from home resources. Our page is being updated continually to include resources that will consolidate the learning that is taking place within our classrooms.
